Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has joined president ruto to advocate an increase in the salaries of other civil servants.Gachagua said that his salary of ksh 1.2M is too much for him.
Gachagua said that any kenyan receiving a salary of ksh 500,000 has more than enough. He said that his wife is pastor and does not spend too much. Besides all his children are earning by themselves.
This comes weeks after the SRC proposed an increase in the salaries of the president and that of his DP by 14% and that of the other executive members to caution them from the rising cost of living.
The president publicly declined the offer saying his government was dedicated to improve the lives of those who voted for him who a majority are low income earners. He approved an increase in the salaries of police officers and that of teachers by 7%-10%.
Ruto said that his salary and of other executive members could wait. He also said that the main goal should be reduce the gap between those paid high salaries and the low income earners.
Gachagua’s remarks comes days after TIFA in its report detailed that only 3% of kenyans receive a pay of over ksh 50,000.
