EXPECT A RISE IN BUS FARES

Matatu operators have issued a notice about the expected increase in fare costs country wide.

The rise in the fare is attributed to the increase in value added Tax VAT on petroleum products from the current 8% to 16%.

The Parliament passed the increase in the VAT citing that the previous government had not paid the subsidy it owed petroleum suppliers.Majority leader Kimani Ichung’wa said that the government was using an approximate amount of Ksh 16 B per month to subsidize the products.

Petrol and diesel are expected to rise by relatively ksh 20 per litre. Those travelling will feel the impact due to the hike. Suppliers will also have to increase their cost of goods due to the increase in transportation costs

The president William Ruto assented the finance bill 2023 into law . This paved way for the government to charge the 16% increase.

The increase is also expected to see an increase in the prices of common commodities further affirming that the burden of the harsh economy is not going to be any soon easier.

Kenyans continue to criticize president Ruto’s government that has imposed numerous taxes on the already frustrated Kenyans.
