This came about after it was discovered that the vast majority of the victims had changed their names after joining the cult leader Paul Mackenzie’s Good News International Church. Because of the contradictory identities, the Kenya Red Cross said that the tracing process was slow and challenging.
Authorities believe that the cult leaders changed their names on purpose to hide their members’ whereabouts.

14 victims had been reunited with their relatives as of Saturday, May 13, according to Coast Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha, and 93 DNA samples had been taken from excavated remains.

According to Onyancha, one more person has been reported missing since Friday, bringing the total to 610.
She also stated that the exhumations had been put on hold for two days, or until Tuesday, May 16, in order to reorganize the logistical assistance. The 800-acre Shakahola forest has yielded 201 bodies as of this past Saturday.
